The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial nationwide flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very distinguished position in Japanese culture.
There are various dozens of various cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a few days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the 12 months with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties beneath the blooming trees.
